Tools can now summarize policies, draft reports, analyze data, and even suggest audit findings within minutes. But while AI increases speed, it does not replace judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why critical thinking is becoming the most important skill for internal auditors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is especially relevant in the GenAI world. If auditors do not deeply understand the issues they are reviewing, AI-generated outputs may look sophisticated while being fundamentally shallow. AI can produce convincing language and structured analysis, but it cannot truly understand business context, organizational politics, ethics, or human behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Internal auditors still need to ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Does this make sense?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What evidence supports it?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What risks are missing?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What assumptions are being made?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trent Russell, my personal internal audit guru, compares AI to a very fast junior auditor: productive and helpful, but still requiring supervision and review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As GenAI becomes increasingly effective at data analytics, transaction testing, and routine compliance checks, internal audit functions will need to evolve. Traditional control testing and data-heavy activities are exactly the areas where AI delivers the highest efficiency gains. This means internal auditors should shift more toward an advisory role &#8211; helping management make better business decisions through healthy skepticism, challenge, and independent judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The real value of internal audit will no longer come from identifying exceptions in datasets, but from asking difficult questions, challenging assumptions, and helping organizations navigate uncertainty and risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The future belongs to auditors who use AI to enhance thinking and not to replace it.
